Charles Town Historic Landmarks Commission

About Us

The Charles Town Historic Landmarks Commission is a body appointed by City Council. The members of the commission are volunteers that research historic buildings, write articles on preservation issues, give advice on development plans for historic buildings, approve sign applications in the downtown overlay district and designate Charles Town Historic Landmarks.

The HLC meets the second Monday of every month at 7:30pm at City Hall. The meeting is open to the public.

We are always looking for volunteers to help with HLC projects, research and writing. Please join us at one of our meetings or contact HLC Chair, Charity Beth Long if you would like to volunteer.

  Charity Beth Long moved to Charles Town in the fall of 2005 after falling in love with the Brown-Shugart House. Since that time she and her husband Kevin have been working to restore their 1885 gem back to its original grandeur. Charity is passionate about heritage tourism, historic preservation and history and is excited to be able to combine all three with her work on the HLC. By trade Ms. Long is a Voice Teacher, who specializes in Contemporary Commercial Music including Musical Theater, Jazz, Gospel, Pap and Rock singing styles.

• Jeff Whitaker

  Commission Member

  Jeff Whitaker has served on the Charles Town HLC for over ten years. He is a graduate of Penn State University's College of Arts & Architecture with Master degree credits in Regional and Urban Planning. He is a registered architect in Washington D.C., Virginia and West Virginia and is a member of the American Institute of Architects. Presently he works for Architecture Two Thousand. In his spare time, he has served as coach for Youth Soccer in Annandale Virginia as well as in Charles Town, WV and he served for several years as Assistant Head Coach for Jefferson High School.

  Kevin is a PMP and ITIL credentialed IT project manager by trade and a historic preservationist in his spare time. In the past he served on the Charles Town planning commission and is happy to have been able to provide the HLC with their web site.
